Humanity has always looked for a helper. First simple stone tools, then complex mechanisms, and today — programs that think. We have grown used to treating artificial intelligence as a clever encyclopedia that simply answers our questions. But a completely different reality lies ahead of us.
The prompts we write to Large Language Models (LLMs) today can feel like a miracle. But it is like having a very intelligent yet passive employee: it does exactly what you say, adds nothing of its own, and the moment a problem appears it freezes and waits for further instructions.
The cover of this blog puts it beautifully and precisely: agentic engineering is not simply sending a request to an LLM. It means fundamentally changing the operating logic of the system.
This field is not called an art for nothing. Agentic engineering is the art of designing systems that make decisions on their own, verify their own work, and carry real tasks through to completion. Agentic systems combine the following remarkable properties:
Independent will. They analyse the situation and choose the optimal path themselves. Like an experienced chess player, they see several moves ahead.
Self-review (reflection). Just as people err, artificial intelligence can err too. But agents are able to criticise their own work, find the mistake and correct it in time.
Logical completion. Give them a clear goal and they will solve the problem independently — working around obstacles if they have to — and see the job through.
Imagine you write the request "plan a trip for me". An ordinary artificial intelligence will simply write you a list of suggestions as text. An agentic system will search for flights, compare prices, book the hotel, build a packing list based on the weather, and send the finished tickets straight to your inbox.
We are standing at the threshold of a new era of interacting with technology. The future no longer belongs to machines that silently execute commands, but to digital partners that work alongside us and are capable of improving themselves.
